A few days ago I came back from the Dolomites, where I spent a few days hiking in the area called the RosenGarten Group, located in the Sudtirol in Italy. It is a stunning place, where a wave of sharp peaks and massive walls takes you into a different world.

One day, high up in the mountains, I woke up around 6 in the morning and decided to cross the pass called Passo Principe to see what was on the other side. There were two routs to choose from. One down, to the valley, and one up, to the ridge. The way up lead through a steep couloir, with a tongue of snow and ice in it.

The curiosity of the view from the top made me choose the couloir. It did not look difficult from the pass, even when on that day, I wore the sandals on my feet. Until about thirty minutes later…

I started climbing up. I reached the level of snow and attacked it with joy and determination. Step by step, carefully placing my feet on the snow covered by the ice, I digged the steps in it. I was closer and closer to the top.

The wall was really steep now, the surface of the snow covered with ice reflected the distant rays of the sun, hiding just behind that ridge I wanted to reach. It was so close… yet so far, as now every step became increasingly dangerous. The area was marvellously beautiful, but what I saw were a few meters of snow and ice. I placed my shoes carefully, balancing on the steep surface of the ice. It was high, and the wrong step would cost me much.

It was in the middle of the couloir that I considered a retreat…

But the way down, to the valley was not an option. Neither was the fall. It was too steep, and slippery, the first step down would be the last one. I would just slide down, like a kid having fun on his sled. My shoes had no crampons on them, only slightly irregular soles. Procrastination? Indecision? They did not exist.

Like a ship you burn on the shore of the enemy(Tony Robbins), I cut off the possibilities of retreat or failure. There was only one option. To go up.

To see the view, to break through that ice, and not to give up. Simply because I had no chance to do it.

Eiger

the Murderous Mountain

There is no need to love the mountains to see that some of them… have characters, that transform those who face them and can reveal surprising and life-changing facts. You can nearly feel their breath.

It happens when you visit Grindelwald in Switzerland and look up.

There… you will see a rock wall, with three massive peaks, called by the Swiss : the Eiger, the Jungfrau and the Mönch.

The first of them, not the highest one, is also called the Murderous Mountain. Its north face is 6000 feet height. In German Mordwand ( murderous mountain) looks nearly exactly the same as a word Nordwand ( “north face” or “north wall”). It is a game of words that comes close to the truth when it comes to this particular peek. It never sees any ray of sun and has killed at least 64 climbers since 1935.

There is something very… unexpected, that makes this particular mountain so important.

Yes… people say- it is its shape, darkness or height and constant rock avalanches that sweep the wall and transform it into a labyrinth that can easily kill an inattentive climber. Or the difference between the surprisingly dangerous 6000 feet wall and calm and refreshing meadow surrounding it, that looks like a “stone standing in a flower garden” ( Rebuffat). Or the tragedies that are associated with it.

But the mountain goes far beyond the revelations it has for the climbers or hikers hungry for startling beauty.

Its inward-curving cavity transforms the north wall into a prison for clouds, and wind. Once they get in, they flow from one rock formation to the other, until they go up to the summit and disappear. Look close on the photo, you will see that shape. It is a world in itself.

The north face is clearly visible from a village placed about 5 km away. There are houses, a few shops and hotels with huge verandas where people sit and watch the wall through the telescopes, whenever something “interesting” happens.

They are so close to the climbers and the wall, they can nearly touch them, and see the expression on their faces. The risk and cosiness come very very close to each other.

The climbers are clearly visible when they fight in this kingdom of shadow and fury, where strong winds can turn the weather around in a matter of minutes. And the climbers see the people on the verandas. So close, yet far away, like divided by a glass wall…. in a distance of one word, that turns everything around in our lives.

Mountaineers who manage to climb the Eiger are changed forever.

The visitors are just a minute away from the wall, yet they stay in their safe and warm environment, able to watch the tragedies and human achievement unfold in front of their eyes.

In the safety of their comfort zones, rarely knowing what it means to face and fight their fears, fall and stand up, win and reach their dreams, fulfill deepest passions. In the distance of one word…  DO it!

so close, they can nearly touch it…

Trust… when you build a company and want to help people, or the ecosystem, build trust. Be the word you speak. Take massive action toward your dreams and show others what is possible.

and create a business that will be recession-proof
If you build a company and want it to be a lasting, influential one, it is fundamental to create this bond, not just a good image that comes from (for example) investing in charitable actions. If your goal is to help the world, leave it as a better place, when it is time to go… make people trust you. This way they will really benefit from what you have to offer. They will not only buy your products, but really do what you say, take action, breakthrough their own fake limitations, and follow your guidelines. Try to help someone through a discussion… it is quite difficult. But… establish a friendship, and guide through example rather than through force or advertising tricks. In this immensely overcrowded world we live in… trust saves time.

Look on the history of  Zappos.com, Virgin, Apple or Tony Robbins companies. Four firms that deal with the shoes, planes, trains, technology or personal mastery. There are numerous other companies that offer similar products, but the quality of customer relations that has been built by them… cannot be matched. We trust Richard Branson, Tony Hsieh, Steve Jobs or Tony Robbins, and learn from the immensely.

When there is trust, there is no fear. Your clients will not only buy from you, but listen to what you say and follow your ideas. You will be able to help them if it is your intention ,and influence them to take action, so they will shape their own dreams.

Last Monday I had a really bad stomach ache. All I could do was sleep. Sometimes we all experience it, it comes accompanied by a temperature, tiredness and a slightly changed understanding of the world.
Now, two days later, I think about what I eat, as it builds my blood, heart, stomach, skin and lungs.

Isn’t it the same with our thoughts? What we allow to come into our minds, creates the way we feel and think about the presence and future.

Greg Louganis, one of the greatest divers in the history, won his first Olympic silver medal at the age of 16, and four gold medals four and eight years later. He received the James E. A piece of paper you buy when you want to see a movie. You have it, so you can enter the theater and wait for the show to enroll in front of your eyes. If the movie is bad, you either leave or fall asleep. You have just paid for the void, wasted your time. And if the story is good… you become one with the actors, let the movie take you into the heart of it. The new world has just been created.

The ticket will not create the experience, but at times help you reach the heart of darkness or joy, understand something new.

If you have your own calling, create products, services, generate great income that will allow you reach more people who are interesting to spend your time with, money will make it happen faster, reach- help more.

It is funny how money creates euphoria.

It makes sense as long as you know what you are after.

Are you building something- a company, skyscrapers, create movies? Do you want to travel the world, and feel free to go and stay wherever you want? Are you a practical idealist who knows that most of our dreams can come true, and money is one of the bridges that will let you catch the dream?
