What kind of leadership skills will be required in the future?

THE FUTURE

Our future will require the ability to find new solutions to the growing problems of the ecosystem, the stability of world peace, and thus our survival. In many already destitute nations, such as parts of Africa and South America, a lack of food can easily create wars between groups of people. The changing situation will bring huge challenges and also great opportunities. Business will flourish, and it will build strong foundations for the security and future of our planet.

In the future what leadership skills will be needed? And what type of leaders will be required?
Throughout history, we have seen time and again that chaos always gives birth to a strong ruler: Napoleon Bonaparte, the god of war, Alexander the Great of Macedon, or in more recent history, Joseph Stalin.
But if we want to protect our future we will need something absolutely opposite. To survive as a whole, to sustain life on earth, not just for humans but for the animals and plants, to have fresh water and clean air we need leaders who will be able to unify the whole planet. Humans and wildlife. With the growing number of people and declining resources of fresh water and food, we will have no choice but to start existing more consciously as one organism. Or to start fighting for food, which will encourage catastrophic consequences, which is what happened in Rwanda and Burundi in 1994, when genocide claimed the lives of nearly 1 million people in only 100 days.

Forecasts For the Future

• our current population of 6.8 billion is estimated to grow to 8.9 billion by 2050, which will continue to increase the already high levels of pollution, conflicts between nations, and a growing need for food and water and thus more fertile land
• growing need for strong individuals and to raise of the importance of proper authority
• depletion of the fisheries of the oceans
• more severe weather changes and weather-related catastrophes like hurricanes as well as more difficulty in producing food because of too high or too low temperatures
• rising level of poverty caused by the weather changes, and therefore a rise in terrorism
• huge differences between the wealthy and the poor and the rise of wealth in the more technologically advanced nations

But not just negative forecasts; there will be some positive ones, too:

• decrease in pollution because of an increase in human consciousness about the need to sustain life; popularity of eco-friendly technology and thinking
• birth of a new type of “profitable and good for the planet” business, as well as business leaders like Richard Branson
• increase of awareness of the growth of practical education; the importance and power of the internet and TV
• rising level of health concerns that will catapult the protection of the wildlife
• growth of large corporations

So the leadership skills that will be needed are:

• integrity, complete honesty
• open-minded cooperation with nature as a partner and surrounding oneself with the top thinkers on the planet
• drive for excellence
• hunger for knowledge about the stability of the ecosystem
• strategic thinking and decisiveness like long-term goal planning and the ability to monetize the crisis
• the desire to persuade business people to invest in “green” companies, and to give such firms the ability to prosper
• empowerment
• passion about the future
• persuasiveness
• independent thinking as well as the ability to respect and listen to others
• ability to question reality
• ability to understand human psychology and the behavior of the masses

Nature has the power to rebuild itself, but we need to give it time. The 21st century is the era of choice; if we can think globally, our future will be more prosperous and happy than we have ever experienced before in the history of humankind. There is a way to do it—education and integrity are the keys to the future.

The world of the future will not resemble the world we currently know. Our whole planet is changing. We are breaking down the ecosystem and thus weakening its ability to rebuild balance and stability on this planet. And we need natural harmony if the whole system is to thrive, which includes clear water, wholesome food and fresh air. There are many feasible solutions to this problem right now, and still more that are yet to be discovered. But to succeed, we will need a new type of leadership, one headed by such an individual as Richard Branson.

The Current Situation

A simple example such as the sperm whale can illustrate our current situation. Recent studies have shown that the tissue of sperm whales contains significant amounts of toxic metals like mercury, cadmium, chromium, titanium, silver, lead and aluminium in doses that are far beyond what is acceptable to an organism’s ability to reproduce and sustain its species. Chromium alone is known to cause cancer in humans. These findings show the unfolding danger not only for the fauna and flora of the oceans, but also of humans since many of us consume fish. Seafood is the primary source of animal protein for 1 billion people on our planet. The fact that whales contain such high levels of toxins demonstrates an obvious truth: that all other ocean-dwelling species are exposed to them as well.

The oceans are filled with toxins that were mostly created after the second World War when we dumped huge numbers of contaminants into the water, including the fertilizers we use on our crops that are washed from the fields and eventually flow into the oceans.

Such high levels of toxins are deadly because rather than being expelled from the body or system, they are absorbed and passed on to the next generation, thus accumulating. The level of mercury in whale tissue, for example, is as high as 16 parts per million. Keeping in mind that 1 part per million in the body of fish is considered inedible, you can see that this is a serious issue.

The state of the earth is like a Rubik’s cube—when you shift one square all the other sides shift as well. We have reached astounding achievements in our history, from inventions to scaling the highest peaks in the world to walking on the Moon, so we know we have the capacity to reverse this situation before it’s too late, but we need major changes.

Maria Callas, Martina Navratilova, Queen Elizabeth I, the great ballet dancers- Anna Pavlova, Dame Margot Fonteyn, among many others. Their performance usually amuses us, often brings tears- when one sees the level of greatness human being can achieve. But the question also is- what the price of such unspeakable level of skills is, and whether they were happy in their lives or not.

Maria Callas, who inspired generations of women singers, and  is considered the best female opera singer of all time, had really dramatic personal life, and died considerably young – at the age of 54.

AYN RAND

One of the most controversial thinkers of the XX century. Named by some “the woman of the XX century”.
Born in Russia, February the 2nd, 1905. A Russian-American philosopher, novelist and a playwright. She is an author of many books on philosophy and two best-selling novels, of which one- “Atlas Shrugged” is known to be the second most widely read book in America, after the Bible, and a worldwide success. She created a philosophy of Individualism and Objectivism, which influenced America in the second part of the XX century.

“Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision.” – Ayn Rand “The Fountainhead”, written on the wall directly across from the entrance to The American Adventure rotunda at Walt Disney World’s Epcot.

MARIA CALLAS

(December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977)
The most versatile opera singer of the XX century. A perfectionist, her unique talent and extremely hard work combined together created unspeakable masterpieces, thus giving her a nickname- La Divina.

She started her career by singing the most difficult operas, the ability which has not been equaled by any other opera singer yet.
Forced by her mother to sing from the age of three. After a difficult childhood, in poverty and dysfunctional family relationships, she continued her singing education in Greece. She once said:
“De Hildalgo had the real great training, maybe even the last real training of the real bel canto. As a young girl—thirteen years old—I was immediately thrown into her arms, meaning that I learned the secrets, the ways of this bel canto, which of course as you well know, is not just beautiful singing. It is a very hard training; it is a sort of a straight-jacket that you’re supposed to put on, whether you like it or not. You have to learn to read, to write, to form your sentences, how far you can go, fall, hurt yourself, put yourself back on your feet continuously. ”
Her real career on stage lasted only a decade from her early thirties to the age of 42.

2006 : Opera News wrote of her: “Nearly thirty years after her death, she’s still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists.”

The Circle of Life

We are complex beings. We need satisfaction both in our personal and professional lives, no matter what we choose as our occupation. We are all aware of people who achieve great financial success just to mask their loneliness or lack of self-confidence. But we are also aware of those like Richard Branson (one of the richest and most respected entrepreneurs in the world, creator of the Virgin brand), who have managed to balance their personal lives with their business, finding satisfaction and fulfilment in both areas.

If our lives are one entity – one circle – then the different areas of it, like home and family, or finance and career, are the parts of it. All parts are important; they create the whole picture, the whole body and mind of an individual.

Modern science singles out six main parts of human development:

• sphere of ethics and spirit – our values that we live by
• home and family
• socio-cultural sphere of life – our social bonds with friends and extended family
• health and fitness – our diet and exercises
• finance and career
• education and mind development – your individual way of improving your skills and knowledge

All these spheres are important, and closely correlated. One influences the other. You will vastly improve your life if you care for all areas of yourself, and if you set goals for each separate sphere.

If you already know that you need a change, that something might be better – like your relationships with your family, or your finances – then you must seek new ways to do it.

Writing Down Your Goals

It has been proven that one of the best ways to achieve what we want is to write our thoughts down.

Why is that? And what happens when you write down your goals?

• It’s like planning a trip: you write down what you want to achieve so that you can see what steps are needed in order to get there, and you can also see your progress.
• If you can write it you can measure it, and if you can measure it you can achieve it.
• The process of writing down your thoughts forces you to be more concise  and clear about the purpose of your actions.
• You save time, because writing down your goals gives your mind the clarity and motivation to seek solutions instead of coping with the initial idea: what do I want.
• When you write you stimulate your imagination; you need to visualize what you really want.
• You motivate yourself by taking action and seeing your intangible desires in tangible form via letters or shapes or colors – if  you decide to paint them, for example.

Remember, concrete plans bring specific concrete results; vague thoughts and vague plans usually bring chaos and small results…or worse create disability

1. See events as a learning experience.

As Napoleon Hill said: “Every adversity, every failure and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.” Instead of focusing on things that don’t work, learn from them and keep moving forward.

Two famous and anonymous sayings describe the refreshing power of …mistakes:

• There is no failure – only feedback.
• Feedback is the breakfast of champions…

2. Remind yourself of your success.

Recall the times when you were successful and performed well and imagine yourself going through those situations again. Then regularly nourish yourself by imagining something you would like to do in the future and visualize yourself achieving it with the same feelings of success as these previous times.

3. Be thankful.

“Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves – or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth” –Ayn Rand.

When you focus on the “negative” situation you are accustomed to creating over and over in your life, you forget to value all that you do have. Just think…according to many surveys, most of the world’s population is much, much poorer than we are.

Think of what you have instead of what you don’t have. Be thankful for it.

See the people around you, the beauty of our Earth, the endless possibilities of improvement. When we feel grateful for what we do have, it’s not possible to feel stressed or fearful. Having an attitude of gratitude puts you in a very different and very pleasant state of mind.

4. Feed and clean your mind regularly.

So many people in history started with nothing – they were poor or lonely, or lost everything before achieving great things. Stay away from the constant stream of negativity in newspapers for one week and feed your mind with inspiration instead. Read an inspirational book, learn about strong, successful personalities like Albert Einstein, Ayn Rand or Richard Branson, take a dance class, spend time in nature, discover yourself. Remember to keep your FOCUS. It is essential.

5. Set goals and take action.

When you realize what the key to life’s joy is, keep going. The key lies in the self-aware, self confident you. You build it by setting small goals, achieving them and than repeating this action again and again until you attain your dream. You realize your goals by taking action here and now.

It is also the people who surround you that move you forward or slow you down. Your teachers have the possibility of speeding up your process of change by passing on to you the experiences that took them years to build up. Use somebody else’s experience to speed up your own learning processes. Use teachers and mentors and learn from the best.

Tips to remember:

When you know where you want to go, you know where to direct your efforts. It is only a matter of time to get there. And then you can use your feedback and build your way towards your desired success . And this is when you start to see your problems as the equivalent of taking a cold shower…refreshing and enriching.

Many people believe that leaders are born and not made because they think that talent cannot be learned.

Unlike the inherent musical aptitude of Mozart, for example, who was playing minuets at the age of five, leadership can be learned because skill alone does not make a leader, behavior does.

Leadership Characteristics

Leaders do not demand brilliance, they help craft brilliance; they guide, not rule.

In order to bring the best out of her team, a leader should demonstrate the very characteristics she wants in her team. In other words, lead by example.
So what characteristics makes an effective and respected leader? She should be:

• competent
• innovative
• decisive
• inspiring
• passionate
• positive

• open-minded
• courageous
• imaginative
• humble (she may know it all, but she’s not a know-it-all)

Developing Leadership Skills

If you don’t yet possess all these qualities, rest assured that as you earn the trust and respect from those in your team, you will feel more confident, courageous, decisive, etc. This symbiotic relationship allows those you are leading to feel part of a team, rather than mere worker bees who must be seen and not heard.
In 2008 the British government proposed an initiative where young people would swear an oath of allegiance to ‘Queen and Country’ to increase national loyalty. The initiative was dropped because you can’t force people into loyalty; you must earn it. This proposal said more about the weak leadership of the country rather than the lack of loyalty from its citizens. Good leadership is often more about serving than leading.

A leader makes things happen by:

• Having a goal and a plan (as motivational speaker Harvey Mackay once said, “A dream is just a dream, but a goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.”)
• Putting together a good team
• Inspiring and encouraging each team member to give their absolute best

As a leader you must possess a good measure of self-awareness so that you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and can therefore build a symbiotic team that is mutually beneficial.

Importance of Fun Learning

As we all know from experience, the things we tend to remember are the things that interest us. People learn better through experiential learning and games. The best way to build leadership skills is to make it both fun and instructive, and the best way to do that is by playing leadership games. From simple ones where the task is less important than the experience, to more specific ones where the task is the experience, the most important thing is to make sure the challenge is enjoyable.

An example of a simple leadership game is The Survival Game, which is common in leadership training seminars. Each team is given a survival scenario (like plane crash or shipwreck) and must come up with ten items necessary for survival. In a leadership game like this, the leader exercises her skill in ensuring a group consensus.

More complex games might include Clinton Swaine’s Play To Win, a three-day seminar that teaches people to solve real-world problems with real-world tools within a game format. The skills you learn here will translate to your real-world business. Swaine’s leadership game is based on Plato’s reflection that “you can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”.

Jack Canfield, another popular motivational speaker and author, describes his Come As You Will Be game, in which you throw a party where all the guests dress, talk and act as the person they want to be in five years’ time. This game saturates your subconscious with images and, more importantly, feelings of your success by strengthening positive neural pathways to your brain. What’s real in your mind is real in your life.

So if you see yourself as a leader, start by learning leadership behavior through self-awareness, observing successful leaders, and participating in leadership games to develop your skills.
